In this episode
of ‘What’s In YOUR Kit’ you’ll meet A/V Technician Omar Colom who runs the A/V Educate group on Facebook . Omar’s work involves corporate clients who need last minute changes delivered on the fly with consistency. His streaming, graphics and video kit is setup to be flexible & to help him meet those needs without lugging an unreasonable amount of gear everywhere. No matter what part of the audio industry you work in, there is a good chance you have had to interface with video and streaming folks like Omar in recent years, and it’s awesome to have him here so we can all compare notes. From hotel A/V to houses of worship, from political events to pop concerts, streaming and webcasting is a huge business in 2020 that is only getting bigger.
If you are just starting out on a career path in audio, you will probably be tasked as some point with setting up, operating or just interfacing with video gear. It can quite literally pay the bills to be prepared and at least know the basics. Likewise for those running small sound companies servicing B2B corporate, political and educational clients. While you may not want to do a deep dive into video as a company, adding a simple streaming package to smaller events can be the difference between just getting work and actually turning a good profit on smaller shows.
Enterprise Video Market Value to top 20 Billion by 2023
When I first started doing audio for webcast and streaming nearly 10 years ago, one of the first major clients I worked with did an on-site cost analysis for each webcast we produced. They compared webcast production costs against the traditional method of flying in executives from around the world for big essential meetings. Simply put, the numbers were a revelation. Before getting past the travel and hotel arrangements for executive level staff, they saved more than the price of production. Purely from a cost perspective, it was obvious this was going to be a big part of future work.
In the years since, I’ve been involved in streaming or webcasting every type of event from tech conferences to charity baseball games, government events to political protests. There is nothing suggesting a slow down and every indicator points to long-term market growth. Services like Facebook, Youtube, Twitch, Instagram and dozens more have made what was recently costly enterprise technology, free for anyone with a reasonable internet connection.
These technologies and ones we haven’t seen yet will continue to show up in our work. Our jobs in audio will involve more multi-media elements and new delivery methods in the coming years and we need to be prepared. Consumers will continue to grow accustomed to using these technologies in their daily lives and already expect to see that reflected when attending special events. It will be our job as always to navigate the changing landscape & deliver professional audio regardless of the delivery method.
Let us know if you’d like to see more about streaming, webcasting and interfacing with video on the channel in future episodes. Leave any questions you have about streaming or webcasting here or on YouTube, as well as any questions for Omar.
Submit YOUR Kit
I get questions regularly asking if the ‘What’s In Your Kit’ series is still going & how to submit a video, but very few people follow up and send those videos in. If you want to be in the series, comment below or message me at info@dcsoundop.com for details. If we use your video in a future episode, I’ll send you a $20 Amazon Gift Card to help restock your expendables.
