Mic Mod w/ Audio Tests

We’re cracking open an sm57, boiling the insides out & then adding a switch to take the transformer in and out of circuit. We’ve made some very unscientific early tests and included them in the video so you can hear the difference so far. An extension tube is in the works to get this one put back together properly, unless a smaller switch can be found that would integrate better into the handle.

However, the stock transformer doesn’t leave much room for adding anything inside that handle, no matter how big the switch. Removing it completely is the more popular modification for sure. If all you’re trying to do is remove the transformer, this is a super simple process that you should be able to handle with basic tools.

Removing the transformer does result in a noticeable loss of output, something we will try to correct for in the next video by adding a simple resistor across pins 2 & 3 at the output. The other difference you’ll notice is in the tone. There are all sorts of opinions online about what to expect, but overall it’s a slightly darker sound. Don’t take my word for it though.

The goal for this project is to send it out to you to test, however you like. Sign up using the request form below. Add your name to the list if you’d like to try this mic when it’s finished & report back with your tests. A/B it on your favorite snare, guitar or hook us up with your best scream metal vocals. As long as you’re willing to share your results & send it on to the next person, you can try what you like.
