Dante Audio Network Hacks
Setting up a Dante audio network can be very simple. You may only be plugging in a single device, or getting as involved as connecting entire campuses. There are a number of reasons you may need to go beyond un-managed switches in any network. No matter what you’re using it for, this often comes with some unwanted noise. Thankfully, we can hack our network hardware with help from Noctua to restore the quiet.
Pro-sumer
As you step up in network gear from consumer grade into enterprise equipment, you’ll notice a serious increase in volume. However quiet, passive cooling through heat-sinks and vents alone is not enough to keep up with the thermal output of these more powerful units. As a result, fans are often the choice.
Most users won’t ever care about how loud their network switch is. It is going into a rack, in a server room or at very least another part of the building. But what if you need to keep it a bit closer? What if you’ve made every effort to reduce mechanical noise in a space designed for recording or broadcast? How about if your microphones still pick up the fan whine of your server room even after separating all of your noisy gear.
Hack Upgrades
If you’re any of those uses, you might want to think about upgrading the fans in your gear. Even one or two small fans in a network switch can add up with all of the other gear in the rack to a cumulative noise level that is problematic. In this video we’re tackling the SG300 with a set of Noctua PWM fans that have a dramatic affect on the unit’s noise pollution.
This is an easy one. It may void the original warranty from Cisco however, so be aware. What other gear do you have with noisy fans? However quiet your space,I bet it’s not silent . Now that you’re listening for it, you’ll probably hear all sorts of noises in your space you weren’t bothered by before. Have fun.
