If you’ve already got their microphones and reference monitors, this may indeed be the missing link in your audio setup. That’s what Neumann is hoping anyway, with the release of their MT48 audio interface. This is a 12 x 12 USB-C interface with AES67 networking built in, designed to meet the needs of the most demanding on-the-go producers and engineers. They’ve given it a ton of practical features that real engineers will use, including a soft case for extra protection when traveling. While the Universal Audio Apollo interfaces have been favored by mobile professionals for years now, this touchscreen interface and mixer (built in partnership with Merging Technologies) might just be the one to cause folks to switch things up.
The built-in mixer features onboard DSP including fully parametric 4-band EQ and a 3-way dynamics processor (gate/compressor/limiter) per channel. They have also included high-quality reverb for more convincing monitor mixes. There is ADAT & S/PDIF expandability, MIDI, GPIO and even a talkback mic built right into the unit.
We won’t know what it’s really like until we get to try it in person, but it’s a safe bet that this one will live up to the expectations of Neumann customers. If it plays nice with Apple’s m1 & m2 systems over time, they’ll really have something special on their hands. For more details and current pricing / availability, check out the MT48 at B&H Photo.
