Updates, New OS versions & Planning Ahead
In this video we’re taking a quick look at how to check and update the firmware in your Dante devices. While many devices do take advantage of the built in update tools in controller, we also talk about the growing number of individual pieces of software required from manufacturers to work with various new Dante products. How do you feel about needing specific software to adjust basic parameters on devices across a network? Should @Audinate step in and make certain features addressable in controller in the same way you are able to adjust things like the output level of their Avio adapters so easily?
We also talk about getting a plan together for all of your gear that may have software or firmware updates during the past months of extended downtime. Incremental updates are far easier than trying to catch up on a big batch all at once and testing ahead of time helps you stay familiar with the technology.
I’ve also talked to a lot of folks who have reevaluated their inventory recently, clearing out things where possible & putting those resources to use in way that better meet current needs. For some that has been retooling to meet new customer requests, for others it has meant having cash on hand to quite literally keep the roof overhead.
I’ve always followed the idea that if something is not currently needed, I don’t want to be in the business of collecting gear. The speakers and amplifiers, microphones and cables we’ve been accustomed to are reliable and can be put away for years on end without much issue. Computers are different though. Software, firmware & compatibility between platforms is a fluid art that will not benefit by letting hardware sit unused.
Let me know what you think and what you plan has been for keeping your gear all up to date and playing nice this year. Thanks for watching!
