Quantum, Thunderbolt Too
We’re looking at the Quantum 2 Thunderbolt audio interface from the team at PreSonus in this video. Quantum 2 brings a lot to the table in a sub-one rack space unit and manages it without breaking the budget. Four XMAX preamps are built-in, delivering familiar quality and performance. The preamps are remote controlled via the Universal Control software or from right inside their Studio One 4 DAW software. As a result, they are fully recallable from within your DAW Project File!
Recalling a past session and getting back to work as quickly as possible is greatly simplified due to this. At the same time, it allows for incredibly fast setup. Start a new session for the first time by selecting the interface from a list of presets, Studio One will do the rest. All inputs and outputs are patched, routed, and the first four channels armed and ready for action.
Expandability on the Quantum 2 is also impressive. Thunderbolt passthroughs are provided to link up to 4 units, each unit can also be paired with up to two of the DP88 8-channel Mic Pres for a potential 80 total input channels. Other ADAT Optical gear will also work just fine.
Thunderbolt 2 moves a staggering amount of data relative to typical audio needs, and does so in this instance with very low latency. As a result, the Quantum 2 does any needed monitoring and mixing in software, without onboard DSP on the hardware side. Using the PreSonus Studio One 4 DAW software, it’s a really seamless experience. However, more testing will be needed before I’d feel comfortable at those crazy high channel counts.
