Sifting through eBay recently, I came across this Electrodata AG-1 tone generator from 1988, and it got me thinking. Tone generators are one of those tools that only a few years ago you’d be reaching for constantly on a gig. Before they were built into digital consoles & available as apps on your phone, many of the little tools we use everyday, tone generators, decibel meters, real-time analyzers and even remote controls, had a much bigger physical presence in our kits.
I honestly don’t ever see calibrated hardware being replaced in making critical measurements. For casual use though, quick reference and troubleshooting, software and apps might be all you ever need. So I wanted to take a quick look at some of the tools we used just a few years ago, that while still relevant today, may largely go unused by the next generation of Audio techs.
What other tools did you carry regularly that have been replaced by technology? Little things like the bubble level or inclinometer built into my iPhone are ridiculously helpful to have in my pocket during a load-in and setup.
