#strippers
If you can’t justify shelling out the $20 – 40 for a proper Knipex or Wiha end-type wire stripper, you might be in luck. While my standard strippers have seen a whole lot of use over the years, there is always room in the kit for the right tool for a certain job. If you’re like me, you probably favor different similar tools and techniques depending on the situation, materials and job at hand. For larger copper used in making Speakon cables, I really like to use an auto-stripper. It’s a great tool, but falls short on smaller, more delicate tasks. For hook-up wire and other sensitive stripping needs, a precision tool is helpful to give you the confidence needed to work efficiently. End-type wire strippers provide exactly that precision & that often comes at a price.
At the moment you can find the Tolsen model super cheap on eBay (supplies may be limited from this seller). You can also use this link to find other end type strippers on eBay if the above seller is out. On first impressions, these are good strippers with accurate and repeatable cutting ability. I’ve been impressed so far with both how easy it is to set the appropriate depth of cut & how well it stays in place through multiple cuts without slipping.
The verdict is still out on if these will hold up to the same level of abuse that Knipex & Wiha tools are known to endure. Cheap tools often start off great, but dull quickly or wear out unexpectedly. I’m not planning to do any production level work with this tool, so the trade off is okay to get the functionality I couldn’t otherwise afford.
I’ll be using this wire stripper regularly here on the workbench and will keep you updated as I get to know them better. In the mean time, Happy New Year & Happy Stripping!
